"BonaResponds International Service Day

The basic idea of the day is to go and make the world a better place. And then, spread the good that you did with others around the globe!

We all have talents to share. Too often we don't try to do something to help because we fear our little impact would be too small to matter. This is a day to show that we all matter and that if everyone does a little, much will get done."

here are some of the job sites. (We don't really know the entire list!)

* Atlanta GA- a crew from Haygood Methodist Church will be working on a Habitat Build for a family from Iraq
* Birmingham AL-will be working at a home for women just released from prison
* Buffalo NY-will have over 100 people working at 10 different sites in conjunction with VillaVolunteers and the SBU Alumni
* Cambodia: Sean (one of the original leaders of BonaResponds) will be working at an orphanage
* Chicago IL- a large group of volunteers led by BonaResponds-Chicago will be working at Grant Park
* Leogane Haiti- Andy (another of the original BonaResponds leaders) will be working on earthquake recovery
* Olean NY: Mary (another of the original BonaResponds leaders (and Jim's sister) will be working with the American Red Cross on disaster preparation
* New York City, NY- Bridget (another of the original BonaResponds leaders) and her family will be cooking for a local homeless shelter.
* San Diego CA- Sarah, Carrie, and others will be helping a retired Marine who has been living in his garage since wildfires swept the area in 2007.
* Los Angeles CA- Anna and over 100 of her closest friends will be helping with a large health fair, walk, and run.
* Philadelphia PA- Three teams will be working on painting, a lot clean up, and with children at a local pool.
* Greenville SC- Fr Pat will be working among the poor and often forgotten around his parish.
* Ethiopia- Sr. Rosie will have a crew of high school children working around her hospital
* Dallas TX- approximately 20 volunteers will be helping physically challenged children enjoy a day at a local horse ranch
* Machias NY-Pete and his CYC crew will be repairing picnic tables, painting, and cleaning a park
* Washington DC-The Zimmers and Anthony will be leading a group (largely of alumni) working at a food bank.
* Your hometown- you tell us!

Many more sites will be doing things! But you get the idea. And you can join the list too! It is not too late.

Robert Daugherty, US Sourcing Leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers, will be on Campus Thursday, March 18th, 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm, Walsh Aud. He will speak on "Your Personal Brand and Business Success." Reception will follow.

Beta Gamma Sigma Induction

St. Bonaventure University's Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma will have their induction ceremony on Tuesday, April 20th in the University Club. Students who show superior academic achievements will be invited to join. Membership into this society is considered a significant accomplishment.

Darwin L. King and Dr. Carl J. Case presented their paper titled “The Evolving Mission Statement: An Essential Communication Tool” at the 17th Annual International Conference of the American Society of Business and Behavior Sciences (ASBBS).


Dr. Kimberly Young was quoted in a story posted on Foxnews.com last week. She was quoted in the story "World Bank's Online Game Isn't a Real-World Solution, Critics Say" that outlined the benefits and limitations of using online gaming to help promote service learning.

Tom Donahoe to Speak at SBU

Tom Donahoe, former General Manager for the Buffalo Bills will be speaking on Campus, Tuesday, March 16th at 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm.

The Olean YMCA recognizes individuals on a yearly basis for their contributions to the community. Dr. Zahid Y. Khairullah is a 2010 Honoree and will be recognized at the 25^th annual A Salute to Olean dinner on Thursday March 4, 2010.

A great opportunity for alumni to get involved! Save the day!

On March 27 2010, BonaResponds will be sponsoring the first Bonaventure (inter) national service day. We are asking all alumni (and everyone else) to get involved.

It is really easy. No matter where you are around the world (we have at least one group in Singapore and maybe another in Western China as well). Go out into your local community and volunteer. Then share your experience with the hundreds of other volunteers that will also be volunteering.

It will be great fun and a great way to "change the world!"

An article about Laurie Branch in the OTH. Not only is Ms. Branch the CEO of Iroquois Group, but she is on the SBU Board of Trustees and teaches a couple sections of Finance 301 at SBU.

New Journalism course opened up to business majors

Sounds like a good new course! And yet another example of how the distance between all fields is shrinking. As it has been said many times, "we no longer live in a world of silos".

These are some of the hottest stories of the last year. You’ll find one in the sports section, another in entertainment, and the third on the front page. But each is a business story. Business journalism is telling stories about people — how they create strategy, negotiate deals, take risks and make (or lose) money. That includes Wall Street, of course, and it includes the small shops you’ll find on Main Street in any town. It also includes multibillion-dollar industries like sports and entertainment. In this class, you will learn how to navigate financial statements and ask questions about numbers in a way that’s understandable to the ordinary citizen. This class is vital for anyone who plans work within – sports, entertainment or any field in which big money drives the big decisions. The instructor is Tim O’Shei, managing editor of the Business First newspaper in Buffalo. "

Art Roberts, a 1968 graduate and former U.S. Army artillery officer, will draw on his most recent experience as the Vice President of Human Resources for Eastman Kodak on November 10 at 8 p.m., in the Quick Arts Center. The Leadership Center encourages all students in leadership positions or interested in pursuing a business degree to come, interact and engage with the fellow Bonnie!

Former SBU Professor to Give Talk

Former SBU School of Business Professor, Dr. Steve Horan, will give a talk this Thursday Nov. 5th at the University Club above the Hickey. The event is scheduled for 8:30 am and breakfast will be served. Dr. Horan will discuss various topics dealing with Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Dr. Horan is currently Head, Professional Education Content and Private Wealth for the CFA Institute.

The event is $10 for those outside the School of Business.
